Advice to millennials. Grad season is over, but George Saunders’ words to the Syracuse University graduating class of 2013 are timeless. His advice to the graduates? Be kinder and avoid selfishness. (The New York Times)

Time means less engagement. A new Gallup poll found that the longer K-12 teachers stay on the job, the less engaged they are. About 35 percent of teachers who have been on the job for less than a year are engaged in the work, while about 30 percent of teachers who have been working for one to three years are engaged.  (Education Week)

Cheating as a career. This “ghost writer” tells his story of how he became an essay writer for college students in England. Students pay £150 (about $230) for a standard essay, and this writer has learned every trick to avoid getting caught for plagiarism. While he does not condone cheating, he does enjoy his work and “it beats getting the train to work.” (Times Higher Education)

Productive struggles. Community colleges are increasing rigor by implementing three strategies, one of which is to make struggle a part of the learning process. The thought is that productive struggle allows students to “wrestle with complex ideas…and capitalize on their in ways that promote in-depth and transferable learning.” (Community College Spotlight)
